Touted as 2023’s hotest blockchain trends, Polygon Labs joined the zero-knowedge technology releasing its zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) beta.

The mainnet of Polygon’s zkEVM is a fully functional, open-source that also has a functional prover. The components of its zkEVM are open source, enabling developers to study, discuss, and contribute to additional developments in the zero knowledge field. Sandeep Nailwal, co founder of Polygon Technology, took to twitter to announce that the first transaction on the brand new zkEVM was started by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. Successfully sending 0.005 ETH to a random address along with a little cheeky message “A few million constraints for man, unconstrained scalability for mankind.”, a subtle reference to Neil Armstrong’s historic first words after setting foot on the moon. His cunny pun attempt didn’t go unnoticed, setting the gas limit to “69042.”

The “zk” stands for zero-knowledge proof, which zkEVM technology batch process transactions into proofs on the Ethereum network. This method helps keep Ethereum reasonably free of activity by breaking down transactions into little bits of data. zk technology was created as a layer-2 scaling solution compatible with Ethereum. It draws scalability, security directly from the Ethereum network itself, providing a seamless experience for developers. Consequently, blockchains can now process transactions more quickly while maintaining low gas costs. Over 50 companies have shown keenness to build using the Polygon zkEVM technology.

The Zero Knowledge Proof(ZKP) encryption method was first put forth by MIT researchers in 1980s. The zk protocol is a method of verification that takes place between a prover and a verifier. In a system of proof with zero knowledge, the prover can demonstrate to the verifier that they are aware of the specific piece of knowledge or solution without disclosing the information itself. Modern cryptography leverages this to offer hgher leves of security and privacy.

The first-ever deployment of a permissionless zero-knowledge scaling solution for Ethereum took place earlier this week when Matter Labs unveiled its zero-knowledge EVM mainnet, dubbed zkSync Era in Alpha.
