Dutch authorities detained the Tornado Cash developer in August 2022 as part of a criminal probe into the crypto mixing business.

Alex Pertsev, the creator of Tornado Cash, is poised to be released from prison after nearly nine months behind bars. Pertsev was arrested in August of last year by Dutch police on accusations of money laundering using the cryptocurrency mixing service Tornado Cash.

Cointelegraph confirmed the report with sources close to the situation, and Pertsev is expected to return home on April 26, his birthday. The suspended release under observation means that the Tornado cash creator can await trial from the comfort of his own home.

On August 8, the US Treasury Department placed dozens of Tornado Cash addresses on the Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) sanctions list, prompting Pertsev’s arrest.

According to Pertsev’s wife, who spoke to Cointelegraph and expressed her delight at the verdict: “The suspended release would see Pertsev put under supervision with an ankle monitor.”

“I believe that now we will be able to fully prepare the defense and prove that Alex did not do anything that he is accused of, and I am very sorry for the wasted time that he spent in prison. It had a powerful effect on him and on me, it cardinally changed our lives. But the main thing is that he will be free soon.”

Earlier in November 2022, a Dutch judge dismissed the developer’s request to be released under monitoring on the grounds that Pertsev poses a flight risk, according to the prosecution. The prosecution claims that Pertsev was a key figure in Tornado Cash’s operation. Bail for the developer was denied yet again in February of this year.

Crypto mixers, also known as mixing services, are platforms that are frequently used to conceal the origin of cryptocurrency transactions. These mixers’ goal is to make transactions anonymous and difficult to track. These platforms frequently combine cryptocurrency transactions and transmit them to different wallet addresses. Before the sanctions, Tornado Cash was one of the most popular mixing services.

The crypto community reacted positively to the news of Pertsev’s release under observation. The most essential point, according to Crypto Canal creator and crypto educator, who attended the hearing, is that “he can walk around and work on his defence, which was virtually impossible while detained.”
